Issuing & Acquiring

Zip suffers record one-day fall after US fraud event

Zip's Q1 FY27 update disclosed a coordinated US fraud in which new accounts made purchases that were never repaid, adding A$7.2 million to cash costs and lifting net bad debts to 1.93% of TTV. Shares fell as much as 50.5% intraday before trading about 30% lower, despite TTV up 18% to A$4.6 billion.

Why it matters: onboarding fraud is BNPL's weak spot, and Australian providers under credit licensing will face sharper questions on identity checks.

Schemes & Networks

Amex to cut about 3,500 roles as Q3 profit jumps

American Express booked a US$336 million restructuring charge as net income rose 28% to US$3.71 billion on revenue of US$20 billion. FX-adjusted billed business growth slowed to 8%.

Why it matters: Amex's Australian merchant economics are already squeezed by surcharging reform.

Visa's wider small-merchant interchange cut takes effect in Canada

From 24 October, Canadian merchants with up to CA$750,000 in annual Visa sales qualify for reduced credit interchange. Mastercard has not matched, and both schemes are adding processor fees.

Why it matters: schemes offsetting regulated interchange cuts with network fees, a dynamic the RBA is watching.

Digital Wallets

Bank-owned Paze wallet targets the top 100 US merchants

Early Warning Services says its relaunched Paze wallet holds about 220 million cards and is tracking at four times its 2026 transaction goal. It targets consumers outside Apple's ecosystem.

Why it matters: a live test of a bank-led wallet against Apple Pay, relevant to Australia's wallet debate.

New Products & Features

Meta's Muse agent makes shopping its top use, paid through Stripe Link

About a quarter of Muse users give it shopping tasks, with an average purchase near US$200. Stripe raised credit limits after volumes beat expectations.

Why it matters: agent-initiated payments are scaling before liability and authentication rules are settled.

International

The BNPL provider dropped a Utah ILC plan for an OCC charter, citing new state BNPL rules. Review is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

Why it matters: US BNPL chases charters while Australia folded BNPL into national credit law.
